Prairie Dogs come out to play Bristol Zoo

imageThe first of this year's prairie dog pups have come out to play in the sunshine at Bristol Zoo Gardens this week.

Prairie dogs are born in underground dens in April and May and do not appear above ground until their eyes open at around five weeks old.

The first four pups have now emerged and are already proving a hit with visitors as they can often be seen playing near their burrows. Keepers are expecting more prairie dog babies to emerge from their burrows over the coming weeks.

The pups are the latest in a host of recent arrivals at the zoo. Earlier this year two meerkat babies were born, as well as a howler monkey, a saki monkey and a tiny owl monkey.

Spring and summer is a popular time of year for animal births at the zoo, and the warmer weather means youngsters can often be spotted exploring their new surroundings.

Zoo at home launches Isle of Wight Zoo

imageMay 25th see the launch of Zoo at Home, our new animal handling zone. Founded in partnership with Pets At Home this is the place to meet our friendlier animals, and even get hands-on if you like. The launch is set to be a fun day, with the mayor of Sandown cutting the ribbon, local schoolchildren getting the first experience of the completed zone and the zoo's mascot putting in a guest appearance.
Tuesday also sees the Face of Zoo At Home Competition open. We need an animal to star in our Zoo At Home campaign, so if you think your pet has what it takes to appear on our posters and website go ahead and enter!

Birth of Cheetah Cubs Africa Alive!

imageAfrica Alive! is proud to announce the birth of 5 cheetah cubs. The strong, healthy (and very cute) cubs were born on the 10th of December last year and are being closely watched over by their mother 'Etna'.

This is the second litter to be born at the park, and is a fantastic achievement and a real team effort as 'Etna' was introduced to 'Joshi' at our sister collection Banham zoo. Our cheetah are moved between the two collections from time to time to try and stimulate reproductive behaviour. Whilst actual mating wasn’t observed, once it became apparent that 'Etna' was indeed pregnant, she was brought back to Africa Alive's! off-show breeding facility to ensure that she would have the necessary privacy to rear the cubs successfully.

'Etna' has once again proved to be an excellent mother and has reared the cubs herself. Hopefully, they will not only prove to be an important addition to the park but also, in the longer term, to the European Endangered species breeding Programme (EEP) as a whole.
