Where have all the sparrows gone? Bristol Zoo

imageThey used to be everywhere, chirping from gutters and hedges. So where have all the sparrows gone?
The Avon Gorge & Downs Wildlife Project is holding an event which investigates possible reasons for the decline in sparrow numbers and what we can all do to help them.
Steve Micklewright from Avon Wildlife Trust will talk about the ecology of these little birds at the talk, which will be held on Tuesday, March 9 at Bristol Zoo Gardens.
Steve Micklewright explains: "The cheeky, chirpy house sparrow used to be one of our most common birds, but numbers have dwindled so much they are now a species of conservation concern. We are keen to find out why numbers are dropping and where they are hanging out - but we need the public's help. So, we're asking everyone to take part in the online survey we’re running at www.wildsparrows.org.uk and let us know about any house sparrows they see."

House sparrows have been identified as a species requiring special attention in the Bristol Biodiversity Action Plan. The wild sparrow survey has been organised by Avon Wildlife Trust with the support of the Avon Gorge and Down Wildlife Project, Bristol City Council and Bristol Naturalists’ Society. It is part of the Trust's People and Wildlife project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

For more details, including guidance on how to identify sparrows and join the sparrow survey, see www.wildsparrows.org.uk or contact Avon Wildlife Trust on 0117 917 7270

"Where have all the sparrows gone?" will be held at Bristol Zoo Gardens on Tuesday, March 9, from 7pm to 8pm (£3 per person). The venue is accessible to wheelchair users. Hearing loop in place. To book a place call the Avon Gorge & Downs Wildlife Project on 0117 903 0609 or email mleivers@bristolzoo.org.uk

New Essex Piglets arrive in time for Spring Colchester Zoo

imageJust in time for Spring a new Essex Pig Sow arrived at the end of February from Jimmy's Farm bringing along with her her 11 week old piglets!

The Essex Pig is a very rare breed and was once extinct in 1967. They are still offically classified as extinct however farms, like Jimmy's, are doing the best they can to make the Essex Pig become one of the first breeds of animal EVER to be reintroduced into the world.

Colchester Zoo is proud to have the rare breed of pigs and they can be seen in the Essex Pig enclosure in the middle of Familiar Friends!

Some breaking news! Ark on the Edge

Ark on the Edge recently approached 3 people to see if they would consider being Patrons for us and I am very pleased to say that in all 3 cases they accepted.

So our new Patrons are:

Philippa Tomson who conducts the weather forecast for Tyne Tees TV. Philippa came to visit us on Tuesday 9th February to have a look round meet some people and have a chat. Philippa was very taken with Ark on the Edge and graciously accepted our invitation of being a Patron. Philippa is hoping to do whatever she can for us and attend some of our functions, if she is free.

So thank you so much Philippa for this, Ark on the Edge looks forward to a long and happy partnership with you.

The other two gentlemen have had considerable attachment with us already and both are now retired so we thought it a nice gesture to ask if they would consider being Patrons for us. (In alphabetical order gents!)

Meet Philippa when she judges the Easter Bonnet competition on Friday 2nd April at Ark on the Edge, starts at 11 am. Look under Latest Events for further information.

Dave Davies who is a retired police dog handler, Dave has done police dog displays in the past for our events and also for the boys on our course. He has his own dog consultancy business called happy dogs.

Neville Turner who is a retired vet and lives very locally to us. Neville again has had considerable contact with us, he kindly offered to officially open our centre back in 2007 and since then has had regular contact especially with wild birds coming in and being released.

Ark on the Edge thanks all of you for your committment to us.
